Crematories in New Jersey by law are located on Cemetery grounds. This arrangement has served New Jersey well. By not allowing “stand alone” crematories New Jersey has avoided potentially poor business practices as has happened in other states.
Crematories are permitted by the Department of Environmental Protection and oversight is conducted by the New Jersey State Cemetery Board.
Of the approximately 25 operational crematories within the state 21 are located in regulated cemeteries and 20 are current members of the New Jersey Cemetery Association.
In conjunction with the Mid Atlantic States Cemetery and Funeral Conference a Crematory Operator Certification training program is offered bi annually. Matthews Cremation Division teaches the program and certifies the participants with a five year certificate. Also many of our technicians have attended the Cremation Association of North America’s Certification training program. By attending these programs our member crematories can insure our families that their loved one’s cremation is handled in the utmost professional manner throughout the cremation process.
Cremation is a growing trend in New Jersey and our facilities serve a wide range of ethnic denominations. Crematories in the state offer many different services including, Chapel services, witness rooms and diverse memorialization options.

What is cremation?
Cremation is the process of reducing human remains to bone fragments.
Do I need a funeral director?
Yes, the State of New Jersey requires a funeral director to handle obtaining permits, transportation and to be present at the place of final disposition.
How long must I wait to cremate a loved one?
The waiting time in New Jersey is 24 hours.
Is a casket required?
A casket for cremation itself is not required; however a suitable cremation container is necessary to provide dignity and to protect the crematory staff. Please consult with your funeral director in regard to this request.
May I witness the cremation?
Many member facilities have witness rooms to accommodate this request. Please consult with your funeral director.
